10 Toxic Flowers to Avoid Putting on Cakes

I've been wanting to spread awareness of flowers that are toxic. I've found that popular trends make it seem like it is safe to use these flowers on cake. While some flowers are safe as well as edible, there are some that should not be placed anywhere near a cake. These flowers are not fatal, but they can cause similar symptoms to food poisoning. No one wants to have food poisoning symptoms the night of their Wedding, or the day after a party.

  1. Babies Breath- has natural toxins in them that can cause digestive issues, even if they have only come into contact with the buttercream.

2. Hydrangea- All parts of this plant are poisonous.

  1. Delphinium- are a highly toxic flower. No part of the delphinium should come in contact with the cake.

  1. Larkspur- are highly toxic and shouldn't be anywhere near cake.

  1. Hyacinth- Can cause digestive issues.

  1. Hellebores- ALL parts of this plant are toxic. If ingested hellebores could cause skin irritation.

  1. ALL Lilies- this includes: peace lilies, calla lilies, oriental lilies and asiatic lilies.

  1. foxglove-are part of the nightshade family and should not be used on a cake, or anywhere near a cake, in a cake meadow (a current popular trend).

  1. Ranunculus- are toxic and can cause nausea.

  1. Daffodils- contain a toxin that if placed with other flowers will poison the other flowers.
